(Pennsylvania) Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program

Property Tax/Rent Rebate application forms and assistance are available at no cost from Department of Revenue district offices, local Area Agencies on Aging, senior centers and state legislators’ offices.

The department is aware that a company is contacting older Pennsylvanians by mail, offering to prepare Property Tax/Rent Rebate applications for a fee.  While it’s unfortunate that a company is charging for a service that the government and other agencies provide for free, there appears to be nothing illegal about the offer.

Explanation of Program

The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with disabilities age 18 and older. The

Two Degrees co-founders draw on 35-year age gap

With nearly 30 million small businesses in the United States, it can be tricky to find a business model to set you apart from competitors.

The co-founders and entrepreneurs behind Two Degrees Food, a company that produces nutritional bars and feeds children across the world, have used one of their best assets to maximize their reach: a 35-year age difference.

Lauren Walters, 60, and Will Hauser, 25, teamed up to found Two Degrees in 2010, a move that Walters said strengthens their ability to tackle everything from solving business problems to embracing social media.

“It’s interesting to think of it as a ‘model’; I think it’s just sort of evolved,” said Walters, a seasoned entrepreneur and chairman of The Concord Consortium, a nonprofit research and development organization based in Concord, Massachusetts. “I think as

Dear To Her Credit, Years ago I had a MasterCard with Chase Bank on which I ran up a bunch of debt. I couldn’t keep up with my payments and fell behind. I tried to settle with the bank for cents on the dollar, but Chase Bank refused to do so. I let the debt go — about $2,000. The “date of last activity” on my MasterCard account was in January 2002. I live in Mississippi and the statute of limitations on unsecured credit card debt at that time was three years.

The old debt was eventually charged off and naturally my credit has suffered. Now, 10 years later, I received a call last week from a number that I tracked back to a collections agency who left me a message wanting me to call them back immediately. Well, I didn’t, nor do I intend to do so.

What should I do if I receive a second call or something by mail from them? Ignore any future calls?

Ive been thinking more about whether I should commit some additional funds to pay down the principal on my mortgage and reduce my interest paid.

There is already a good deal of discussion on this topic in my posts and , but Ive tried to summarize and update all the pertinent points into something more coherent below.

Other Higher Priorities? I dont think paying extra towards a mortgage should be the highest priority. If you have no emergency fund, high-interest credit card debt, proper insurance, or dont have your IRAs/401ks maxed out, then you probably should focus on those things before worry about paying extra towards your mortgage.

What is your tax situation? Next is the topic of tax-deductibility of mortgage interest. Everyone already gets the standard deduction, which in 2012 is $5,950 for singles, and $11,900 for married filing jointly.

New Ventures 2/17/12

This will likely be my last post from MB Wealth as I have chose to close my brokerage. I am in the final stages of a new employment contract with a large Commodity firm in Chicago. This is goodbye  temporarily but I will be back in the coming weeks. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me via email or telephone if you want to continue to have access to my comments. Crude is approaching the $104 level as forecast in recent posts. We’ve advised clients to start liquidating longs after an $8 run in the last two weeks I think all the activity in Iran has taken Crude too high too quick…just my opinion. The fact that the distillates are not trading higher alongside Crude also supports my thesis that prices may be over stretched. Natural gas has picked up steam the last two sessions poised to trade above the 40 day MA for the first time in 5 months. A trade above $2.85 in March that holds would convince  me a bottom is in and longs are trade able. Until then I have no interest. Stock
